The Brontosaurus is the new Pluto

caveman5

“It’s the classic example of how science works”
(Octavio Mateus, paleotologist at Universidade Nova de Lisboa – Portugal.)

Did you know that the brontosaurus hasn’t been a dinosaur for more than a century? Who knew? According to an article on MSNBC, Science editor Alan Boyle writes that in 1870 two partial skeletons of enormous, long-necked dinosaurs were found in the Western United States. One of the skeletons was classified as Apatosaurus ajax (“deceptive lizard”) and the other as Brontosaurus excelsus (“thunder lizard”).

Boyle writes that years later, in 1903, paleontologists concluded that Brontosaurus and Apatosaurus actually belonged in the same genus. Because Apatosaurus was named first, that name took precedence under the rules of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature.
However, people liked the name brontosaurus, and it stuck.

Good News! Recently an international team of paleontologists has decided that the brontosaurus really is a distinct animal, and should actually be a dinosaur – once again.

Using Octavio’s quote once again (because I really like it) “It’s the classic example of how science works,”. Octavio goes on to say “Especially when hypotheses are based on fragmentary fossils, it is possible for new finds to overthrow years of research.”
Pluto is back. The brontosaurus is back. Thank heavens science relies on cold hard facts to establish the truth – unless they change their minds, again.

Problem with the Tunnel of Babel (aka the Large Hadron Collider)

cern collider 2

Uh Oh. The Large Hadron Collider is currently on the fritz. Engineers suspect a piece of metal may have fallen into the electrical coils creating a short circuit. According to an unnamed expert, ‘a short circuit in the LHC is bad’.
Since the total length of wires inside the LHC could wrap around the equator 6.8 times, locating the short circuit may be difficult. CERN engineers agree that it may take a few weeks to locate the source of the problem.
Here’s the ‘good’ news. Europe’s CERN particle physics center says one of the remedies being considered is to turn up the electrical current high enough to “melt the offending object.”

Maybe it’s just me, but this seems like a really bad idea. We’re not talking about a toaster oven here. The magnetic field alone that can be created by the Large Hadron Collider is 200,000 times the Earth’s magnetic field. So I’m just not sure that turning it on just high enough to melt a stray monkey wrench is wise. Hopefully no more than one ‘offending object’ will be melted along the way.
As of today, March-30-2015 CERN is still weighing its options. For now, the Tunnel of Babel (sorry, Large Hadron Collider) will have to wait a while more before unlocking the secrets of the universe.

More Higgs Boson Humor

bigbang

In the next few posts, we will be taking a serious look at the activities around the Hadron Collider, and the funding of CERN, the organization that directs the research. For example, why is there a statue of the goddess Shiva at the entrance? Who funds this billion dollar scientific toy?

But first, a bit of fun. The attached video courtesy of ‘The Onion’.

Stay tuned to some serious conspiracy blogging.

In The Beginning – God

Creation-of-Adam-Hands-only
Happy New Year! Happy New Beginning!

This year, the CreationFiles Blog resolves to make an impact. 2015 will be the year of interacting with readers in an intentional, personal manner. 2015 will be the year to take a hard look at our views of creation, and the effect that has on our faith walk.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form,
and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering
over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”, and there was light.
And God was the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.
God called the light Day, and the darnkess He called Night. So the evening and the
morning were the first day. Genesis 1:1-5

Our first poll of the year! Please indicate your honest answer. We will display the results soon.

Here’s to a blessed 2015. “Let there be light!”

Funding Atheism – Your Tax Dollars at Work

Funding Atheism – Your Tax Dollars at Work

As a follow-up to yesterday’s post “Blame Sputnik”, it is important to look at the strategy used by our government, and our scientific community to establish evolution as the cornerstone of science education in our public schools, and effectively censure any mention or debate concerning Intelligent Design.

The launch of Sputnik was a catalyst. We needed to ramp up our science education, and fast. But not only that, in order to make sure we won the technology race we emulated our Russian counterparts by removing religion. Our Constitution prevented the outright removal of religion from our country, but we could remove it from the classroom. And the deal was granted. We were the first to the moon. As stated yesterday, we made “Darwinism central to America’s future development. . .” In essence we made a deal with the devil.

Yes, you and I are funding this indoctrination.

Now to be fair, public schools in Tennessee and Louisiana are allowed to teach Intelligent Design(ID). A few other states have tax supported charter schools that teach ID. But for most of the country this is not the case.
Also, I feel strongly that the theory of evolution should be taught. Micro-evolution is a proven scientific process. Right now we are watching the Ebola virus, praying that it does not mutate into a even deadlier airborne virus. Evolution, on a small scale within a species does occur.

But here’s the problem. Any suggestion that evolution cannot fully explain life on earth is immediately branded as ‘unscientific and religious’ and therefore banned from our schools. Yet, the religion of creation without God is taught unchallenged.

All of this supported by two pervasive lies.

First Lie – There is no debate among scientists about evolution.

This is patently not true. In 2006 many scientists signed a petition entitled Dissent from Darwin, produced by the Seattle Center for Science and Culture. Scientists listed on the petition indicated a healthy skepticism that random mutation and natural selection in itself could explain the origin of life. The petition called for a careful examination of Darwin’s theories. Many scientists agree that biological structures of life are far too complex to be explained by random mutation.
Now, this does not mean that these scientists are adherents to the Genesis depiction of creation – but it does clearly indicate that there is a debate. There is reason to look at other explainations.

Second Lie – Teaching Intelligent Design makes people stupid.

Sadly, this may be the most effective method used to keep us away from the Truth. “If you believe that God created the world, you are ignorant.” We hate being ignorant and will do almost anything to look intelligent in the eyes of those judging us. So, this technique is widespread. On a recent NOVA broadcast titled “Intelligent Design on Trial” Kenneth Miller of Brown University said “Intelligent design is a science stopper”. Kevin Paidain of the University of California stated simply, “It makes people stupid.” Read what Richard B Karskee wrote. Richard is assistant legal director at Americans United for Separation of Church and State in Washington D.C. “Major advances in medicine, biology, and the study of human origins hinge on evolution. Understanding evolution is thus becoming more important than ever as we look to biotech industries and medical breakthroughs to combat disease and improve our quality of life. Failure to teach evolution properly leaves our children ill-equipped to contribute to this bright future: it is a form of educational malpractice.”

I need not bore you with an obvious challenge to that lie, but it goes without saying that there are countless young people who were taught Creationism, or Intelligent Design in their private school, or church, or home, that today are brilliant engineers, doctors, and scientists.

Yes, I am hopeful that a healthy debate regarding Intelligent Design can energize the thinking of our young people. I pray that the pressure on our young people to turn away from the Truth will end. However, when you make a deal with the devil, you must pay the consequences.
